Cal Poly At Sunset

Cal Poly lights at night

Cal Poly and surrounding peaks at sunset. Cal Poly's 1,321-acre central campus is nestled at the base of the Santa Lucia Mountains, overlooking the historic community of San Luis Obispo and 'The Morros' - a string of peaks stretching to the ocean in nearby Morro Bay. Cal Poly's land holdings total 9,678 acres, making the university the second largest land-holding university in California and one of the largest land-holding universities in the nation. Cal Poly uses all of its land holdings in active support of the education of its students. This photo was taken by Cal Poly Architecture Lecturer Josef Kasperovich, who took a class to the hills above campus for a discussion on creating photos for design presentations.

The Center for Coastal Marine Sciences - 'Cal Poly Pier'

Students taking samples off Cal Poly Pier in Avila Beach

Students taking samples near the Cal Poly Center for Coastal Marine Sciences -- "The Cal Poly Pier. " Operated by the College of Science and Mathematics since 2001, the pier is located just minutes from campus in Avila Beach. It is the only marine laboratory facility between Santa Barbara and Monterey, and offers access to some of the nation's least impacted coastline and most diverse marine habitats. The facility's prime location has made it a hub of hands-on learning for students and a launching pad for multiple faculty research projects. Photo by Josef Kasperovich.

Winter on the Central Coast

View of campus, mountains and blue sky

The Cal Poly campus and San Luis Obispo in winter. Prentice Wongvibulsin (B.S., Computer Science, 2010) took this photo in January, 2010 from the hills above campus. The Central Coast enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild rainy winters and warm summers. On average it has 50 days with measurable rain per year - mostly from November through March. In summer, the hills turn from green to gold. The Leaning Pine Arboretum on campus showcases plantings from the world's five Mediterranean climate regions.

Concrete Canoe Champions

The Cal Poly Concrete Canoe Champs

Cal Poly's Concrete Canoe team paddling to the national championship -- beating 22 other teams. Cal Poly offers more than 100 academically oriented clubs and teams that help students build skills and resumes for career success. These "instructionally related activities" and their projects complement the university’s hands-on education philosophy and give our students the practical experience they need to get ahead. Cal Poly's 2010 Concrete Canoe Team students put more than 4,600 hours of work into their entry. Half of the points from their win came from their design paper and technical presentation to judges from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Photo by Phil Klein, courtesy of ASCE.
